All trail routes are subject to change based on Parks Victoria directives and the requirements of participant safety based on track conditions and weather. The final route will be published by the HIGHLANDER Australia team a week before the event.

**If you like to use the phone for navigating and are still thinking of which app to use, we suggest the Gaia or Avenue apps that works also on airplane mode after you import the GPX route (Android, iOS, desktop) of the trail and download the map layer of the entire trail area for use offline (requires Premium membership).

Route descriptions

HighlanderHercules

For those ready to journey into the heart of the Alpine region, the 5 day Hercules will challenge and excite in equal measures with just under 100km and 4200 elevation gain.

Day 1 - 14.5km - 1431m ascent
After a shuttle to Mt Creek, your mission is to conquer Mt Bogong (1977m), the highest summit in the Victorian Alps. You will reach the highland plains and stay at Cleve Cole Hut for your first remote night.

Day 2 - 25km - 1092 ascent
The second day will be challenging as this is the longest with more 1000+ ascent! The journey continues along the AAWT downhill on the T-Spur until the Big River crossing, before tackling the climb of Duane Spur, passing Ropers Hut to Mt Nelse North. You will then continue all the way toward Falls Creek until you reach the campsite festivities at Wallace Hut.

Day 3 - 22km - 532m ascent

A long distance will be covered on the third day. You will pass through Mt Cope, around Mt Bundara & Mt Jim before descending to the historic Blair's Hut for the night gathering. This night will be shared with the hikers of the Pegasus format.

Day 4 - 17.8km 1062m ascent

The adventure continues uphill through Dibbins Hut to Mt Loch and then towards Silver Brumby Hut in Hotham for one final night and a gathering of the tribes. This night will be shared with the Orion and Pegasus highlanders.

Day 5 - 13.6km - 484 ascent

This day will be the final push with all highlanders reunited to the finish at Wire Plain, where you will look back on the adventure of a lifetime!

HighlanderPegasus

The route for the 3-day Pegasus has been designed to wow and challenge in equal parts. You will cover 55 km of scenic Alpine trails and tracks, with 2,500m elevation gain.

Day 1 - 19.5km - 648m ascent
You will start off from the Wire Plain Activity Hub in Mt Hotham and reach the iconic Razorback before tackling the descent of the drastic Diamantina Spur the historic Blair's Hut for the night gathering where you will meet your fellow Hercules highlanders.

Day 2 - 17.8km 1062m ascent

The adventure continues with Hercules Highlanders, uphill through Dibbins Hut to Mt Loch and then towards Silver Brumby Hut in Hotham for one final night and a gathering of the tribes. This night will be shared with the fellow hikers of the Orion and Hercules formats.

Day 3 - 13.6km - 484 ascent

This day will be the final push with all highlanders reunited to the finish at Wire Plain, where you will look back on the adventure of a lifetime!

HighlanderOrion

The route for the 2-day Orion includes 1 overnight camp and is perfect for those keen to start their HIGHLANDER journey. You will cover 33 km of scenic Alpine trails and tracks, with over 1000m elevation gain.

Day 1 - 19.4km - 702m ascent

You will start off from the Wire Plain Activity Hub in Mt Hotham, climb Mt Hotham and Mt Loch to then reach Silver Brumby Hut for the main gathering and campsite festival. This evening will be spent alongside fellow hikers from the Pegasus and Hercules groups.

Day 2 - 13.6km - 484 ascent

This day will be the final push with all highlanders reunited to the finish at Wire Plain, where you will look back on the adventure of a lifetime!

HighlanderLyra

The route for the Lyra is perfect for those keen to start their HIGHLANDER journey without the time and equipment requirements of overnight camping. You will cover 25 km of scenic Alpine trails and tracks, with over 500m elevation gain.

Day 1 - 26.5km - 644m ascent
You will start off from the Wire Plain Activity Hub in Mt Hotham talking in the picturesque Brabralung Trail up and around Dinner Plain. Enjoy the wildlife and the undulating tracks, but be prepared for a solid day's hiking.
